Dr. DiGiovanni is an internationally recognized foot and ankle surgeon. He is both a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of the Foot and Ankle Service at Brown Medical School and Rhode Island Hospital, and is also Program Director for the Orthopaedic Residency at Brown and Director of the Foot and Ankle Fellowship at Brown. Dr. DiGiovanni has served on several U.S. and International Editorial Boards, including the journals Foot and Ankle International, the European Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and Techniques in Foot and Ankle Surgery, and has also served on the Board of Directors for the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). He has been honored with being elected Program Chairman for the AOFAS by his peers, and was also chosen at the U.S. Travelling Fellow by the AOFAS. Dr. DiGiovanni is the author of approximately 100 peer review articles, book chapters, and books involving predominantly foot and ankle management, and has been honored multiple times with awards as one of America’s Best Doctors and one of America’s Top Surgeons. He has also been honored by his orthopaedic residents as recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award at Brown, and by his patients as recipient of the Patient's Choice Award. As a member of several different surgical advisory boards, he has helped patent a number of foot and ankle devices which have been approved by t he FDA, and has been invited to lecture across the world on many foot and ankle topics. Dr. DiGiovanni also enjoys active involvement with the foot and ankle care of a number of collegiate, professional, and Olympic athletes, including roles as one of the team physicians for the U.S. Ski Team, the R.I. Stingray Soccer Team, the Providence Bruins, and the Brown University athletic teams. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College, and received a joint MD after training at both the Dartmouth and Brown Medical Schools. Dr. DiGiovanni stayed on for his orthopaedic residency at Brown and then completed a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma there, after which he chose to pursue fellowship training in total joint replacement and reconstruction at Cornell University Medical College-The Hospital for Special Surgery, in New York. He also trained in arthroscopy and sports medicine of the foot and ankle at the Harbor-UCLA and USC affiliated hospitals, and finally travelled to Seattle to complete a foot and ankle trauma and reconstructive fellowship at the University of Washington-Harborview Medical Center. He remains an active fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and continues to be very involved with the AOFAS.
