James O. Maher III, MD
James O. Maher III, M.D., a Clinical Assistant Professor at Brown Medical School, specializes in the areas of arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine.
Dr. Maher uses the arthroscope to treat shoulder, knee and ankle conditions, including tears in cartilage, ligament tears and inflammatory conditions. Arthroscopic surgery is done on a same-day, outpatient basis with a quicker recovery than traditional surgery. Many of Dr. Maher's patients are professional, student or recreational athletes.
A graduate of New York Medical College, Dr. Maher completed his orthopaedic residency training at the same university. He then spent four years on active duty with the US Navy stationed at Newport Naval Hospital. In addition to being the Naval Academy Preparatory Team Physician, he served in Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War. Dr. Maher is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association, and National Athletic Trainers Association. Dr. Maher is the team physician for a number of area sports teams including Salve Regina University, Roger Williams University, St. Georges School and the Newport Gulls Collegiate Summer Baseball League. He is the tournament physician for the ATP Tennis Hall of Fame Tournament in Newport.
