Theodore A.  Blaine, MD

Dr. Theodore Blaine joined the University Orthopedics staff in 2007 after practicing for eight years with Columbia Orthopaedics - New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York. He brings specialized experience in minimally invasive surgery of the shoulder and elbow, and has pioneered several new medical and surgical techniques including injectable medications for shoulder arthritis, minimally invasive shoulder replacement and GPS arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. He also lectures and teaches nationally and internationally on the Reverse Shoulder Replacement, a new procedure for patients with shoulder arthritis and non-repairable rotator cuff tears. Dr. Blaine's clinical interests and experience include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and elbow, orthopaedic trauma, sports medicine and athletic injuries, and orthopaedic research.

Dr. Blaine is currently Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brown Alpert Medical School and Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at Rhode Island Hospital and the Miriam Hospitals. His professional training includes fellowships in shoulder and sports medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, elbow surgery at the Mayo Clinic, and musculoskeletal research at the University of Rochester. He is an active member of multiple selective and prestigious orthopaedic societies, including the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Shoulder and Elbow Society, the American Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He has been recognized as one of the "Best Doctors in America," an award given to only the top 5% of all physicians.

Dr. Blaine is board certified by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons with additional subspecialty accreditation by the American Society of Sports Medicine. A former competitive swimmer and collegiate lacrosse player, Dr. Blaine enjoys treating all athletic injuries in patients of all ages. He has significant expertise in treating shoulder and elbow instability, labral tears, and tendonitis of the shoulder and elbow (impingement syndrome and tennis elbow). He has been team physician at the collegiate and professional level including soccer, football, hockey, lacrosse, and baseball.

Dr. Blaine has authored and edited over 100 papers and textbook chapters in orthopaedic surgery, published two textbooks on minimally invasive shoulder and elbow surgery, and serves on the faculty of several courses sponsored by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has a world renowned reputation and treats many national and international patients. His primary practice is in Southern New England, and he is pleased to serve all patients in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
